Last night

On our last night together
I’ll tell you, I miss you
I’ll tell you, you mean the world to me
I’ll tell you, distance can’t really impact friendship
Though I of course know that it can

On our last night together
I’ll run my hand through your hair one last time
I’ll run through the moments that lead up to this one
I’ll run my tongue against my teeth to keep words in
Though I’ll tell you anyway

On our last night together
I’ll regret our first kiss
I’ll regret our first night together
I’ll regret our, my selfishness
Though I’ve been told that a lot of pain
is worth a bit of pleasure

On our last night together
I won’t cry – that’s a lie
but you won’t be in the room when I do
I won’t watch your cab pull away
      I’ll turn away before
I won’t romanticize your absence
But instead I’ll eat ice cream

On our last night together
You won’t hear me say I love you
because I’ve said it too many times
You won’t run back for one last kiss
because I will pull you back
You won’t regret terrible timing
But you won’t be here anymore

Because our last night was last night
            This isn’t prophecy; nor history
But sharp; stinging; – freshly bleeding
