Special Edition Hits & Shits: Beyoncégate 2013

At 12:01am on Friday the 13th, 2013, I found out Beyoncé released a new album. By 12:10am, the Itunes page to download the album had crashed. By 12:15am , the visual album was downloading on my computer. I will remember this day forever.

The album is incredible. Beyoncé touches on every sound in the R&B, rap and pop genre. She lets loose some funk, she gets down with some soul, and she did it better than everyone else. Music reviews aside, she sold over 80,000 copies in under 3 hours WITHOUT ANY PROMOTION. With no teasers, no leaks, no previews, no clues, she trumped the entire game.

While this album isn’t her best vocally, it’s probably the strongest piece of art she’s ever created. This feminist icon knew exactly what she was doing, and the music accompanied by the videos are brilliantly polished, visually and lyrically. This album is so personal, I imagine it as a doodle out of Bey’s diary. I intend on listening to these songs on repeat until I memorize each one, and the lyrics are the only vocabulary I know.

I could really go on forever about how powerful and important this release was for fans, listeners, pop music, social media and all other aspects of life. Even though this album isn’t chuck full of radio-cut hits, its still going to be number one AND it pushes feminism further into the spotlight of pop media. No one can ignore Beyoncé.
